Summer and Winter Courses After Academic Dismissal

The following information applies to students who have been academically dismissed and are enrolled in (or plan to enroll in) Summer or Winter Session courses at UConn.

Important Information About Summer and Winter Sessions

Summer and Winter Sessions are not considered regular academic semesters and do not carry individual academic standings.

As a result:

  • Summer and Winter coursework cannot remove or change an academic dismissal decision.
  • Summer and Winter Sessions do not count toward the minimum number of semesters a student must remain away from the University before applying for readmission after dismissal.
  • Summer and Winter credits may be used to satisfy academic program requirements for readmission, where applicable.

Impact on GPA

Courses taken during Summer or Winter Sessions may affect a student’s academic record in the following ways:

  • Summer and Winter grades are included in a student’s cumulative GPA.

  • Repeat Courses and Academic Standing:

    • Under University policy, when a course is repeated, the grade and credits from the most recent attempt are used in GPA calculations, while the prior attempt remains on the transcript but is removed from the GPA calculation.

    • Academic standing is calculated for fall and spring semesters only. However, a course repeated during a summer or winter session may change the GPA used to determine a student’s academic standing. If a repeat course results in a change in academic standing, the student’s standing will be updated during the next academic standing review, and the student will be notified of their updated standing and any required next steps.

Students Enrolled in Courses at the Time of Dismissal

Courses Already in Progress

If you are enrolled in a Summer or Winter Session course that is already in progress when dismissal decisions are processed, you will remain enrolled in the course.

Your student status in the course will be changed to Non-Degree, and the course and grade will appear in the non-degree section of your UConn transcript.

If you do not wish to remain enrolled, you are responsible for dropping the course before the applicable add/drop deadline. This includes courses in:

  • Summer Session 1 (SS1)
  • Alternative Session 1 (AS1)
  • Summer Divergent Early (SDE)
  • Summer Spanning (SSP)
May Term Courses Completed Before Dismissal

If you completed a May Term course before dismissal decisions were processed:

  • Your status for the course will be changed to Non-Degree.
  • The course and grade will appear in the non-degree section of your UConn transcript.
  • You will earn non-degree credit for the course.
Future Summer Courses

If you are registered for:

  • Summer Session 2 (SS2), or
  • Alternative Session 2 (AS2)
  • Summer Divergent Late (SDL)

You will be administratively dropped from those courses when your dismissal is processed.

Students who wish to take these courses after dismissal must re-register through the University’s Non-Degree program.

Financial Responsibility

Academic dismissal does not automatically remove students from courses that are already in progress or completed.

Students enrolled in non-degree courses are not eligible for federal aid and any financial federal aid will be cancelled at the time of dismissal.

Students who remain enrolled in Summer or Winter courses are responsible for all associated tuition and fees. To be eligible for any refund, students must withdraw from applicable in-progress courses by the published add/drop deadline.
